Client: Sina Teb Setareh Jundi Shapur Company
Location: Khuzestan Province – Ahvaz City
Date: 2020
Project Function: Healthcare
The Star Ahvaz Hospital, located in District 8 of the municipality in the southern part of the city, will operate in a tranquil environment, away from traffic and access issues, with green and refreshing landscaping to provide the best diagnostic and treatment services. The project’s total built area is 52,249 square meters, with a project area of 5,450 square meters.
The presence of an urban square in front of the hospital has helped distribute traffic load effectively. Decentralization, fair distribution of diagnostic and treatment services throughout the city, separation, and facilitation of visitor traffic, along with consideration of environmental conditions and standards for locating healthcare facilities, have all been influential in the placement and stabilization of the hospital building.
Given the hot and dry climate of the area, the design has been carried out in a compact and dense manner to optimize indoor temperature. The building’s orientation, influenced by the regional climate, faces south to southeast, and the use of light-colored facades is designed to minimize heat gain during the hot season.
Since the site experiences extreme heat for most of the year, the parking area has been integrated into the design to facilitate access for visitors. It connects to the clinic lobby on the ground, first, and second floors so that visitors and patients can access the clinic lobby directly from each floor without having to go outside after parking their vehicle.
Due to the longitudinal limitations of the site, height has been utilized to transfer heat from the lobby upwards for space tempering and to define other treatment functions within the building’s volume.
The main entrance of the Star Ahvaz Hospital is one of the most prominent and distinctive parts of the building, defined in a striking and protruding manner. This entrance, with its high openings, tall height, unique landscaping, and furniture, creates a hierarchical difference from other healthcare centers, helping patients and their companions achieve psychological comfort and reduce the stress associated with illness as soon as they enter.
Considerations for optimal natural light and the prevailing and desirable wind directions were also factors in the design. Accordingly, voids were created behind the elevated parts of the building to provide proper ventilation and lighting.
Since hospital entrances are crucial design elements, the visitor parking entrance and the emergency entrance were placed on opposite sides to minimize interference between them.
